Sitka Outdoor Kids gives parents an opportunity to take kids outdoors

There is a new group in Sitka designed to get more families and kids outdoors. Sitka Outdoor Kids is the brainchild of Alice Marcus, the mother of two young boys who participated in a similar group last summer when she lived on the Kenai Peninsula.

Sitka Outdoor Kids will meet twice a week — from 10 a.m. to noon on Tuesdays at various playgrounds in town, and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Fridays at different trailheads. (NOTE: The group now meets at 1:30 p.m., check the Facebook link for updated information.) The group is for kids (and parents) of all ages, Alice said. According to the Sitka Outdoor Kids group page on Facebook, the first Tuesday playground meeting is June 7 at Baranof Elementary School and the first Friday hike is June 10 on the Mosquito Cove Trail.

“My intention is to coordinate the playground meetings every summer and to continue the hikes year-round,” Alice said. “I am a mom of two young boys that play outside all the time. My hope is that this will encourage families of varying backgrounds to get outside and that everyone will meet and have fun! I was in Kenai for a couple of months last summer and attended a group that met at different playgrounds on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and the kids played and had a blast and the adults talked and got to know each other.”

To learn more, contact Alice at 738-5089 or e-mail her at In addition to posting upcoming meeting dates and locations on the Facebook group page, Alice said she will create an e-mail list so she can get the information out to local parents.
