The Sitka Community Playground project will host a Design Day meeting at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 27, in the Blatchley Middle School library. This is a rescheduled time and location for the meeting, which was delayed a day when guest John Dean of Play By Design became stuck in Ketchikan due to bad weather.
The Sitka Community Playground started off as a community effort led by Alice Marcus, who also leads the Sitka Outdoor Kids group. On Sept. 30, during the Sitka Health Summit planning day, the project became one of the three health priority projects for this year that will be backed by the Sitka Health Summit.
“We have a vision to create a safe, accessible and sustainable playground,” Alice said. “We will include public art and youth input on the design to create a place that is a wonderful destination for all.”
The project has been receiving lots of local press over the past week or so. On Tuesday, Oct. 18, the project had a float featuring playground equipment in the Alaska Day Parade. On Friday, Oct. 21, the Daily Sitka Sentinel ran an article (password required). And on Wednesday, Oct. 26, Alice was the featured guest on KCAW-Raven Radio’s Morning Edition interview show (link has streaming audio). We had information about the project on this site in September.
