The steering committee for the proposed Sitka Community Playground will hold a public meeting and open house from 7-8 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 7, at Harrigan Centennial Hall.
The playground steering committee will present information on the proposed location of the playground at Crescent Park, describe the process for getting the proposed playground built and recruit volunteers to help during the different phases of the project. All interested individuals are invited to attend. Children are welcome, too.
The Sitka Community Playground originally got its start as a project from the 2010 Sitka Health Summit, with the intention of building Sitka’s first ADA-accessible playground that also is open during the school day (most Sitka school playgrounds are closed during the school day). But the project faltered when the project leader moved to the Lower 48. In recent months a new leader has taken the project’s helm, and there was a front page article in the Tuesday, July 8, 2014, issue of the Daily Sitka Sentinel and an Aug. 7, 2014, interview on KCAW-Raven Radio about the group’s plans.
