ONLY YOU – Silas Ferguson, age 7, gives Smokey Bear, age 70, a high-five at Starrigavan Campground on Saturday, Aug. 9, as Dalton Voron, age 10, looks on. U.S. Forest Service staff in Sitka hosted a picnic to celebrate Smokey’s 70th birthday. The fire prevention mascot was created in 1944 because of fears that America’s enemies would set forest fires while most U.S. firefighters were in battle overseas. His creation was a collaboration of the Forest Service, the National Association of State Foresters and the Ad Council. (Daily Sitka Sentinel Photo by James Poulson)
